INDICATION
Roxastat 50mg Tab is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic anemia in adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those on dialysis and those not yet requiring dialysis. In CKD, the kidneys fail to produce adequate amounts of erythropoietin, leading to reduced red blood cell production and resulting in fatigue, weakness, and diminished quality of life. Roxastat stimulates the body's own erythropoietin production, raises hemoglobin levels, and improves iron regulation, correcting anemia through an oral, non-injectable approach. The 50mg dose is part of an individualized, weight-based titration regimen managed by a nephrologist.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Roxadustat, the active ingredient in Roxastat, inhibits the HIF prolyl hydroxylase enzyme, preventing the breakdown of hypoxia-inducible factor alpha (HIF-alpha). Under normal conditions, this enzyme degrades HIF-alpha when oxygen is sufficient. By blocking this process, HIF-alpha accumulates and triggers the production of erythropoietin, the hormone that stimulates red blood cell formation in the bone marrow. Roxadustat also reduces hepcidin, a liver hormone that limits iron availability, thereby increasing the supply of iron needed to produce hemoglobin and healthy red blood cells.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Dose is individualized based on body weight and current hemoglobin levels; typically 50mg three times per week.

SIDE EFFECTS

DRUG INTERACTIONS
Roxadustat may interact with proton pump inhibitors and phosphate binders, which can reduce its absorption. Gemfibrozil significantly increases roxadustat exposure and should be avoided. It shares transporter pathways with certain statins; concurrent use may alter statin concentrations. Live vaccines and immunosuppressants should be used with caution in patients on roxadustat therapy.
