INDICATION

Peridots Caps is an antispasmodic supplement containing peppermint and spearmint oils used for the symptomatic relief of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and bowel irregularity. It may also be used for functional dyspepsia and gastrointestinal spasm.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Peppermint oil (l-menthol) acts as a calcium channel blocker on smooth muscle cells of the gastrointestinal tract, reducing intracellular calcium availability and thereby relaxing intestinal smooth muscle. This antispasmodic effect reduces colonic contractions, alleviating abdominal cramping and pain associated with IBS. Spearmint oil complements this action with additional antimicrobial, carminative, and anti-inflammatory properties. The enteric-coated formulation prevents premature release of the oils in the stomach, avoiding heartburn and ensuring delivery to the lower intestine where the antispasmodic effect is needed.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 1 to 2 capsules three times daily, 30 minutes before meals

•      Swallow whole; do not crush or chew (enteric-coated formulation)

Felodipine and nifedipine levels may be elevated. Antacids taken concurrently may dissolve the enteric coating prematurely; take peppermint capsules at least 2 hours apart from antacids. No significant interaction with common gastrointestinal medications at standard doses.
