INDICATION

Norcid Drop 20ML is an anti-colic preparation indicated for the symptomatic relief of excessive gas, colic pain, flatulence, and abdominal bloating in infants and young children. Simethicone (or dimethicone) acts as a defoaming agent that reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles trapped in the gastrointestinal tract, allowing them to combine into larger bubbles that are more easily expelled through belching or passing. It is also used in adults for relief of gas-related discomfort.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Simethicone is a pharmacologically inert silicone-based compound that acts purely through its physical defoaming action. It reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, causing them to coalesce into larger bubbles. These larger bubbles are then eliminated more easily through normal peristaltic movements or eructation. Simethicone is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is excreted unchanged in the feces, giving it an excellent safety profile even in neonates.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

●     Infants up to 2 years: 0.5ml to 1ml given before or after feeds, up to 6 times daily, or as directed by the physician

●     Children 2 to 12 years: 1ml to 2ml after meals and at bedtime

●     Administer directly into the mouth or mix with a small amount of cool water, milk, or infant formula

●     Shake the bottle well before each use

●     Use the calibrated dropper provided for accurate dosing

●     May be given during episodes of colic or as a preventive measure before feeds

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

●     Simethicone is generally very well tolerated with minimal side effects

●     Rare mild allergic reactions in sensitive individuals

Less common:

●     No significant adverse effects have been documented at therapeutic doses

●     Extremely rare hypersensitivity reactions

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Simethicone has no known clinically significant drug interactions due to its non-absorption from the GI tract. However, it may theoretically affect the absorption of other orally administered medications if given simultaneously. It is generally recommended to space administration by 1 hour from other oral medications as a precaution.
