INDICATION

Moxit Eye Drop 5ML is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone ophthalmic solution indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of aerobic gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It is also used as prophylaxis against infection following ocular surgery, including cataract extraction and corneal procedures. Moxifloxacin provides broad-spectrum coverage including atypical organisms and methicillin-resistant strains.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Moxifloxacin inhibits both DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, the two essential enzymes required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. By blocking both targets simultaneously, moxifloxacin achieves bactericidal activity and reduces the likelihood of resistance development. Its 8-methoxy substitution provides enhanced activity against gram-positive organisms including Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus, while maintaining broad gram-negative coverage.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

·        For bacterial conjunctivitis: instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times daily for 7 days

·        For surgical prophylaxis: instill 1 drop 4 times daily starting 1 day before surgery and continuing for 4 to 7 days after

·        Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any surface

·        Remove contact lenses before instillation and wait 15 minutes before reinserting

·        If using other eye drops concurrently, space applications at least 5 minutes apart

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

·        Mild eye irritation and discomfort

·        Dry eyes

·        Blurred vision immediately after instillation

·        Dysgeusia (altered taste) from nasolacrimal drainage

Less common:

·        Conjunctival hyperemia (eye redness)

·        Keratitis with prolonged use

·        Allergic reactions including eyelid swelling and pruritus

·        Corneal precipitates (rare)

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Topical ophthalmic moxifloxacin has minimal systemic absorption and no clinically significant drug interactions. Space applications with other ophthalmic preparations by at least 5 minutes. Avoid concurrent use with topical products containing divalent cations (magnesium, aluminum) that might interfere with fluoroquinolone activity.
