INDICATION

Mofest 400mg is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. It is prescribed for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin and soft tissue infections, and acute bacterial sinusitis. Mofest is also effective against certain intra-abdominal infections when used in combination therapy.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Moxifloxacin works by blocking bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacteria to copy and repair their DNA. It stops the bacteria from rejoining DNA strands after they are cut, causing DNA damage that kills the bacteria. Moxifloxacin is bactericidal and works against a wide range of bacteria, including some strains that are resistant to older fluoroquinolone antibiotics, because of its action on both target enzymes.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 400mg once daily for 5–10 days depending on the type and severity of infection.

•      Take with or without food, but avoid co-administration with antacids, sucralfate, or mineral supplements within 4 hours.

•      Swallow the tablet whole with adequate water.

•      Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve earlier.

Mofest 400mg is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or any fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Caution is required in patients with myasthenia gravis, as fluoroquinolones may exacerbate muscle weakness. Not recommended in children, adolescents under 18, pregnant women, or breastfeeding mothers.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Moxifloxacin carries a risk of additive QT prolongation when combined with antiarrhythmics (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol), antipsychotics, tricyclic antidepressants, or macrolide antibiotics. Antacids containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium reduce moxifloxacin absorption significantly and must be taken at least 4 hours apart. Warfarin anticoagulation may be enhanced when moxifloxacin is co-administered.
