INDICATION
Lumigan Eye Drop is a prostaglandin analogue indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who are intolerant of or insufficiently responsive to other IOP-lowering therapies.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide analogue that increases both uveoscleral and trabecular outflow of aqueous humor. It mimics the natural prostamides, activating matrix metalloproteinases that remodel the extracellular matrix in the ciliary muscle and trabecular meshwork, creating wider drainage pathways. IOP reduction begins within 4 hours and is sustained for 24 hours with once-daily dosing.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
● Instill 1 drop into the affected eye once daily in the evening
● Do not exceed once daily; more frequent use may reduce effectiveness
● Remove contact lenses before instillation; wait 15 minutes before reinserting
● Occlude nasolacrimal duct for 1 to 2 minutes after instillation
SIDE EFFECTS
Common:
● Conjunctival hyperemia
● Eyelash growth: increased length, thickness, and darkness
● Mild eye irritation or pruritus
Less common:
● Irreversible iris darkening, particularly in mixed-color irises
● Periorbital skin pigmentation
● Macular edema in aphakic or pseudophakic patients
● Reactivation of herpes simplex keratitis
NOT RECOMMENDED IN
● Known hypersensitivity to bimatoprost or benzalkonium chloride
● Active intraocular inflammation
● Aphakic patients with compromised posterior capsule
DRUG INTERACTIONS
NSAIDs ophthalmic preparations may reduce prostaglandin analogue efficacy. Thimerosal-containing drops should be separated by 5 minutes. No significant systemic interactions.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
Store at 2 to 25 degrees Celsius. Protect from light. Discard 28 days after opening. Keep out of reach of children.
