INDICATION

Lerace 1000mg Tab is a higher-strength formulation of levetiracetam used as adjunctive antiepileptic therapy in patients whose seizure control requires doses at the higher end of the therapeutic range. It is indicated for partial-onset seizures, myoclonic seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Levetiracetam binds to synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A), modulating neurotransmitter release from presynaptic vesicles. This mechanism reduces the frequency and intensity of abnormal neuronal discharges responsible for seizures. The 1000mg tablet allows fewer tablets per day for patients on high maintenance doses, improving adherence and simplifying regimens in well-established epilepsy management.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Typical maintenance: 1000mg twice daily (2000mg/day total)

•      May be titrated up to 3000mg/day in refractory cases under specialist supervision

•      Take with or without food

•      Always follow the titration and dosing schedule prescribed by your neurologist; never stop abruptly

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Somnolence and fatigue

•      Dizziness and headache

•      Irritability and mood changes

•      Nasopharyngitis

Less common:

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Levetiracetam has minimal pharmacokinetic drug interactions. It does not inhibit or induce CYP450 enzymes and has low protein binding. Probenecid may reduce urinary excretion of its metabolite. Alcohol and CNS depressants increase sedation. Unlike many antiepileptics, levetiracetam does not alter the levels of other AEDs or hormonal contraceptives.
