INDICATION

Laxante Tab is a stimulant laxative indicated for the short-term relief of constipation and for bowel evacuation before surgical procedures, colonoscopy, and radiological examinations. It is recommended for use when dietary and lifestyle measures have been insufficient to restore normal bowel function.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Bisacodyl is a diphenylmethane stimulant laxative that is hydrolyzed by intestinal enzymes to its active form, bisacodyl diphenol. This active metabolite stimulates the mucosa of the large intestine by directly irritating nerve endings in the colonic wall, increasing peristaltic contractions and promoting bowel movement. It also reduces colonic fluid absorption and increases secretion of fluids and electrolytes into the bowel lumen, softening stool and accelerating defecation.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 1 to 2 tablets (5 to 10mg) once daily, preferably at night

•      Bowel preparation: as directed by the physician before procedure

•      Swallow tablets whole with water; do not crush, chew, or take within 1 hour of dairy products or antacids

•      Not recommended for continuous use beyond 7 days without medical advice

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Abdominal cramping and discomfort

•      Nausea

•      Diarrhoea with excessive dosing

•      Griping pain

Less common:

•      Electrolyte imbalance (hypokalaemia) with prolonged use

•      Rectal irritation

•      Melanosis coli (harmless brown discoloration of colon) with chronic use

•      Dependence and reduced bowel motility with overuse

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Intestinal obstruction, ileus, or suspected appendicitis

•      Severe abdominal pain of unknown cause

•      Inflammatory bowel disease during acute flare

•      Children under 4 years

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Antacids and milk taken within 1 hour of bisacodyl dissolve the enteric coating prematurely, causing stomach irritation and reducing efficacy; take at least 1 hour apart. Potassium-depleting drugs used concurrently (e.g., corticosteroids, diuretics) increase hypokalaemia risk with laxative misuse. Prolonged use may impair absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and certain medications due to reduced intestinal transit time.
