INDICATION

Jaxikan 100mg/5ml is a third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections in children including acute otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and lower respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible organisms.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Cefixime exerts bactericidal activity by binding to penicillin-binding proteins on the bacterial cell membrane, inhibiting the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This disrupts cell wall integrity and causes osmotic lysis. It is resistant to many beta-lactamases and has broad activity against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

●     Children: 8mg/kg/day as a single dose or divided into two doses

●     Shake well before each use

●     May be taken with or without food

●     Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early

●     Reconstitute with the specified volume of water as directed on the label

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

●     Diarrhea or loose stools

●     Nausea or stomach upset

●     Abdominal pain

Less common:

●     Allergic reactions including skin rash or urticaria

●     Elevated liver enzymes

●     Superinfection with prolonged use

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

●     Known hypersensitivity to cefixime, cephalosporins, or penicillins with severe prior reaction

●     History of antibiotic-associated colitis

●     Renal impairment requires dose adjustment

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Carbamazepine levels may increase with concurrent cefixime. Warfarin effect may be enhanced. Probenecid reduces renal clearance of cefixime, increasing serum levels.

Store below 25 degrees Celsius. After reconstitution, refrigerate and use within 14 days. Shake well before use. Keep out of reach of children.
