INDICATION
Ivermite Lotion is a topical antiparasitic indicated for the treatment of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) in patients aged 6 months and above. It kills lice through a mechanism distinct from traditional pediculicides, making it effective against lice populations that have developed resistance to permethrin and pyrethrin.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Ivermectin binds selectively to glutamate-gated chloride channels found in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This binding increases chloride ion permeability, causing hyperpolarization of the cell membrane, paralysis, and death of the louse. Ivermectin is also ovicidal, killing developing lice within eggs and reducing the need for a second treatment. Its mechanism is independent of the sodium channel pathway used by permethrin, making it effective against resistant lice.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
● Apply sufficient lotion to cover all scalp and hair from roots to tips
● Leave on for 10 minutes
● Rinse thoroughly with water
● A single treatment is usually sufficient
● Comb through with a fine-toothed nit comb to remove dead lice
● Repeat only if live lice are observed 7 days after first treatment
SIDE EFFECTS
Common:
● Mild scalp irritation or redness
● Eye irritation if product contacts the eyes
Less common:
● Allergic skin reaction in very rare cases
● Mild dandruff-like flaking after treatment
NOT RECOMMENDED IN
● Known hypersensitivity to ivermectin or any component
● Infants below 6 months of age
