INDICATION
Hidrasec 10mg Sachet is an anti-secretory antidiarrheal agent indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute watery diarrhea in infants aged 3 months and above. It reduces excessive intestinal fluid secretion without slowing gut motility, making it a safe and effective complement to oral rehydration therapy in young children who are losing fluids rapidly.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Racecadotril is a prodrug rapidly converted to its active metabolite thiorphan, which inhibits enkephalinase (neutral endopeptidase). By preserving endogenous enkephalins in the gut wall, it reduces cyclic AMP-driven hypersecretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen. Unlike loperamide, racecadotril does not slow intestinal transit, does not cause rebound constipation, and does not promote bacterial overgrowth.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
● Infants 3 months and above: 1.5mg/kg per dose, three times daily
● Mix granules with food or a small amount of water before giving
● Give at the beginning of each of the three main meals
● Always use alongside oral rehydration solution
● Continue until two normal stools are passed, for a maximum of 7 days
● Do not exceed the prescribed dose or duration
SIDE EFFECTS
Common:
● Generally, well tolerated in infants
● Vomiting in rare cases
Less common:
● Skin rash or urticaria in very rare cases
● Angioedema reported extremely rarely
NOT RECOMMENDED IN
● Known hypersensitivity to racecadotril or any excipient
● Antibiotic-associated or chronic diarrhea
● Bloody or mucoid stools suggesting invasive bacterial infection
● Infants below 3 months of age
