INDICATION

HA Fem-X 500mg Cap contains evening primrose oil (EPO), a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and is used to relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), breast pain (mastalgia), menopausal symptoms, eczema and inflammatory skin conditions, and as a general supplement for hormonal balance and skin health in women.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Evening primrose oil is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that is converted to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) in the body. DGLA is a precursor to anti-inflammatory prostaglandins of the E1 series, which modulate inflammatory responses and reduce the sensitivity of breast tissue and other organs to hormonal fluctuations. GLA also supports skin barrier integrity, reduces eczema severity, and may help regulate hormonal symptoms by improving cellular membrane function.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 2 to 4 capsules (500mg each) daily with food, or as directed

•      For PMS and mastalgia: 3 to 4 capsules daily starting in the second half of the menstrual cycle

•      For eczema and skin conditions: 4 to 8 capsules daily

•      Take with meals for better absorption

•      Results typically become apparent after 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Mild nausea, headache

•      Loose stools at higher doses

•      Mild abdominal discomfort

Less common:

•      Seizures at very high doses in patients with epilepsy

•      Mild anticoagulant effect at high doses

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      History of epilepsy or seizures — high-dose EPO may lower seizure threshold

•      Use with caution in patients on anticoagulants

•      Do not take with phenothiazine antipsychotics (risk of seizures)

DRUG INTERACTIONS

EPO may enhance antiplatelet effects of aspirin and warfarin. Phenothiazines combined with EPO may lower seizure threshold. EPO should not be taken with phenothiazine antipsychotics.
