INDICATION

HA Zinc Sulphate Tab is used to prevent and treat zinc deficiency, which can present as impaired wound healing, hair loss, loss of taste and smell, poor immune function, and growth retardation in children. It is also used as adjunctive therapy in diarrhoea management in children, and to support immune health in adults.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Zinc is an essential trace mineral that functions as a cofactor for over 300 enzymes involved in DNA synthesis, protein metabolism, cell division, and immune regulation. It plays a key structural role in transcription factors and is critical for the function of T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells. Zinc also supports skin integrity, wound healing, and the senses of taste and smell through its role in the enzyme carbonic anhydrase.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults (deficiency): 1 tablet once daily with food

•      Children: dose adjusted by body weight; consult a doctor

•      Take with food to reduce stomach irritation

•      Always follow the dosage recommended by your healthcare provider

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Nausea and stomach upset, especially when taken on an empty stomach

•      Vomiting

•      Diarrhoea or loose stools

•      Metallic taste in mouth

Less common:

•      Copper deficiency with prolonged high-dose use

•      Anemia (secondary to copper deficiency)

•      Reduced HDL cholesterol at very high doses

•      Headache

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Known hypersensitivity to zinc sulphate or any excipient

•      Avoid high doses in patients with renal impairment

•      Caution in patients with copper deficiency history

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Zinc reduces the absorption of tetracyclines and quinolone antibiotics; take at least 2 hours apart. Zinc may reduce the absorption of penicillamine used in rheumatoid arthritis and Wilson's disease. Calcium, iron, and phosphorus can compete with zinc for intestinal absorption. Thiazide diuretics may increase urinary zinc excretion, potentially worsening deficiency.
