INDICATION

HA Iro Active Cap is a gentle iron supplement with B-vitamins used for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia, particularly in individuals who experience gastrointestinal side effects with standard ferrous sulphate preparations. Ferrous Bisglycinate (a chelated form of iron) offers superior bioavailability and significantly reduced GI irritation compared to inorganic iron salts.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Ferrous Bisglycinate is a chelate of ferrous iron bound to two glycine molecules, protecting iron from oxidation and competing dietary inhibitors, and allowing it to be absorbed via dipeptide transport pathways in addition to standard iron absorption pathways. This results in higher bioavailability at lower doses with markedly reduced constipation and gastric irritation. The accompanying B-vitamins (B6, B12) and folic acid support erythropoiesis, providing the cofactors needed for hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell maturation.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 1 capsule once daily with food

•      Can be taken with or without vitamin C (the chelated form is less dependent on gastric acidity)

•      Suitable for patients who cannot tolerate standard ferrous sulphate tablets

•      Continue for at least 3 months after hemoglobin normalizes to replenish stores

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Generally, better tolerated than ferrous sulphate

•      Mild nausea in sensitive individuals

•      Stools may be slightly darkened

Less common:

•      Less constipation than standard iron supplements

•      Iron overload with excessive prolonged use

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Iron overload conditions (haemochromatosis)

•      Hemolytic anemia not due to iron deficiency

•      Hypersensitivity to any component

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Iron (even chelated forms) reduces the absorption of tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and levothyroxine; separate by at least 2 hours. Folic acid in high doses may mask B12 deficiency. Unlike ferrous sulphate, chelated iron is less affected by antacids and phytates.
