INDICATION

Germidex Solution is a broad-spectrum antiseptic solution indicated for the disinfection and cleansing of skin wounds, abrasions, minor burns, and surgical sites. It is used preoperatively for skin preparation and in clinical settings for antiseptic irrigation.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Povidone-iodine is a complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone and elemental iodine. Upon contact with skin or wound tissue, the complex slowly releases free iodine, which exerts broad-spectrum germicidal activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and spores. Free iodine oxidizes cellular components including amino acids, nucleotides, and fatty acids in the microbial cell membrane, causing cell death. The sustained release of iodine from the povidone carrier provides prolonged antiseptic action.

HOW TO USE

●     Apply directly to the wound or skin area using a sterile gauze or cotton swab

●     For preoperative skin preparation: apply liberally and allow to dry before incision

●     For wound irrigation: dilute as directed by a physician for large wound areas

●     May be applied multiple times daily depending on the clinical scenario

●     For external use only

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

●     Mild skin staining (brown coloration) which is temporary

●     Mild stinging on application to open wounds

Less common:

●     Allergic contact dermatitis in iodine-sensitive individuals

●     Thyroid dysfunction with extensive or prolonged application over large body areas due to systemic iodine absorption

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

●     Known iodine or povidone allergy

●     Thyroid disorders requiring caution with iodine exposure

●     Neonates and premature infants due to risk of thyroid suppression

●     Do not use near the eyes unless a specific ophthalmic formulation

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Concurrent use with mercury-based antiseptics may form a toxic compound. Hydrogen peroxide may reduce povidone-iodine efficacy when combined. Lithium-treated patients should use with caution as iodine excess may affect thyroid-lithium balance.
