INDICATION
Fylod Syrup is a tetracycline-class antibiotic indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, skin and soft tissue infections, acne vulgaris, and other infections caused by doxycycline-susceptible organisms including Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and Rickettsia.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This prevents the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex, blocking the addition of amino acids to the growing polypeptide chain. Doxycycline has excellent tissue penetration and a long half-life allowing once or twice daily dosing.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
● Adults: 200mg on the first day as a loading dose, then 100mg once daily
● Children above 8 years: 4mg/kg on day one, then 2mg/kg once daily
● Shake well before use
● Take with food or a full glass of water to reduce esophageal irritation
● Complete the full prescribed course
SIDE EFFECTS
Common:
● Nausea or stomach upset
● Diarrhea
● Photosensitivity reactions on sun exposure
Less common:
● Esophageal ulceration if taken without adequate water
● Tooth discoloration in children under 8 years
● Candidal overgrowth with prolonged use
NOT RECOMMENDED IN
● Children below 8 years due to permanent tooth discoloration
● Pregnant and breastfeeding women
● Severe hepatic impairment
● Known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Antacids, iron, calcium, and zinc supplements reduce doxycycline absorption and should be separated by at least 2 hours. Doxycycline may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives. Concurrent use with retinoids increases the risk of intracranial hypertension. Warfarin anticoagulant effect may be enhanced.
