INDICATION

Fortipred 1% Eye Drop is indicated for the treatment of steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the anterior segment of the eye, including iritis, cyclitis, allergic conjunctivitis, superficial punctate keratitis, and post-operative inflammation following cataract surgery or other ocular procedures.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Prednisolone acetate is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid that exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting phospholipase A2 through lipocortin induction, thereby blocking the production of both prostaglandins and leukotrienes from the arachidonic acid cascade. In the eye, this reduces capillary permeability, inflammatory cell infiltration, corneal neovascularization, and fibroblast proliferation. The 1% concentration provides a higher anti-inflammatory potency than the 0.12% formulation, making it suitable for moderate to severe ocular inflammation.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Instill 1 to 2 drops into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye 2 to 4 times daily

•      In the first 24 to 48 hours, dosage may be increased to every hour for severe inflammation

•      Shake well before each use as this is a suspension formulation

•      Taper gradually; do not discontinue abruptly to avoid rebound inflammation

•      Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination

•      Remove contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

 

•      Transient burning or stinging on instillation

•      Temporary blurring of vision after application

Less common:

•      Elevated intraocular pressure with prolonged use, potentially leading to glaucoma

•      Posterior subcapsular cataract formation with extended therapy

•      Secondary ocular infections due to immunosuppressive effect

•      Delayed corneal wound healing

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva including herpes simplex and vaccinia

•      Fungal or mycobacterial ocular infections

•      Acute purulent untreated bacterial eye infections

•      Known hypersensitivity to prednisolone or any component

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Concurrent anti-glaucoma medications may require dose adjustment if intraocular pressure rises during treatment. NSAIDs eye drops used concurrently may increase the risk of corneal healing complications. Systemic corticosteroids may have additive immunosuppressive effects with significant topical absorption.

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Store between 8 to 25 degrees Celsius. Protect from direct sunlight and freezing. Shake well before use. Discard 28 days after first opening. Keep out of reach of children.
