INDICATION

Flow DS 500ML is a sterile combined dextrose and isotonic saline infusion indicated for rehydration, sodium replacement, and caloric support in patients requiring a smaller fluid volume than the 1000ml presentation. It is used post-operatively, during acute illness, and in controlled fluid management settings.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Flow DS (Dextrose Saline) combines dextrose 5% and normal saline 0.9%, providing both caloric energy (170 kcal/L) and isotonic sodium chloride (154 mEq/L each of sodium and chloride). The dextrose component is metabolized to free water and CO2, while the sodium chloride remains extracellular, expanding plasma volume. This combination is particularly useful in conditions requiring concurrent sodium replacement and energy provision, such as fever-related fluid losses or moderate dehydration.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Administered intravenously under physician supervision

•      Rate and volume individualized based on clinical requirements

•      Useful for shorter infusion periods or in patients requiring tighter fluid control

•      Monitor blood glucose, serum electrolytes, and fluid balance

•      Adjust rate based on patient response and clinical assessment

•      Typically used over 1 to 2 hours per bag during maintenance therapy

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Hyperglycemia with rapid administration in susceptible patients

•      Vein irritation at the infusion site with prolonged use

 

Less common:

•      Electrolyte disturbances with repeated or excessive use

•      Fluid overload in patients with compromised cardiac function

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Uncontrolled hyperglycemia

•      Hypernatremia or hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis

•      Active intracranial pathology requiring fluid restriction

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Avoid mixing with blood products. Monitor closely when used alongside insulin or potassium-affecting medications. Incompatible with amphotericin B.
