INDICATION

Flow DS 1000ML is a sterile combined isotonic dextrose and saline infusion indicated for fluid and electrolyte replacement, post-operative hydration, management of dehydration with sodium deficit, and caloric supplementation in patients requiring sodium and glucose simultaneously.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Flow DS (Dextrose Saline) combines dextrose 5% and normal saline 0.9%, providing both caloric energy (170 kcal/L) and isotonic sodium chloride (154 mEq/L each of sodium and chloride). The dextrose component is metabolized to free water and CO2, while the sodium chloride remains extracellular, expanding plasma volume. This combination is particularly useful in conditions requiring concurrent sodium replacement and energy provision, such as fever-related fluid losses or moderate dehydration.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Administered intravenously under physician supervision

•      Rate and volume are individualized based on the degree of dehydration, electrolyte status, and caloric needs

•      Monitor serum sodium, blood glucose, and fluid balance throughout administration

•      Adjust infusion rate based on urine output and clinical response

•      Avoid rapid infusion in patients with cardiac or renal compromise

•      Do not use as the sole fluid for prolonged maintenance in patients with potassium deficits without supplementation

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Hyperglycemia in diabetic patients or with rapid infusion

•      Fluid retention or peripheral edema with excessive volumes

Less common:

•      Hypernatremia or hyperchloremia with large volumes

•      Hypokalemia without potassium supplementation in prolonged therapy

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Uncontrolled hyperglycemia

•      Hypernatremia or hyperchloremia

•      Severe congestive heart failure or pulmonary edema without careful monitoring

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Avoid mixing with blood products. Monitor closely when used alongside insulin or potassium-affecting medications. Incompatible with amphotericin B.

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
