INDICATION

Flow DS 1/5 (Paeds) 500ML is a sterile paediatric maintenance intravenous fluid indicated for routine daily fluid and electrolyte maintenance in children and infants who are unable to maintain adequate oral intake due to illness, surgery, or any other clinical condition requiring IV maintenance therapy.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

DS 1/5 provides dextrose 4% and sodium chloride 0.18%, formulated specifically for paediatric maintenance. It delivers a low sodium load (31 mEq/L) appropriate for children's lower daily sodium requirements, while providing glucose for energy. Glucose metabolism releases free water for cellular hydration. The formulation is designed based on paediatric daily maintenance requirements and prevents hypoglycemia and electrolyte imbalances during periods of restricted oral intake.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Administered intravenously under medical supervision in paediatric settings

•      Calculate volume using the Holliday-Segar formula: 100 ml/kg for first 10kg, 50 ml/kg for next 10kg, 20 ml/kg for each kg above 20kg per day

•      Monitor blood glucose, serum sodium, and potassium at regular intervals

•      Adjust rate and composition based on clinical response and laboratory results

•      Do not use as a resuscitation fluid for hypovolemia

•      Use with caution in neonates under specialist supervision

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Hyponatremia with excess fluid administration in susceptible children

•      Mild hyperglycemia with rapid infusion

Less common:

•      Dilutional electrolyte disturbances with prolonged use without monitoring

•      Fluid overload in infants with limited renal reserve

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Acute resuscitation or circulatory shock requiring isotonic fluids

•      Neonates without neonatologist oversight

•      Hyperglycemia or known glucose metabolism disorders
