INDICATION

Flow Dex 5% 500ML is a sterile dextrose infusion solution indicated for fluid and caloric replacement, drug dilution, and hydration support in patients requiring a smaller infusion volume than the 1000ml presentation. It is used during surgical procedures, post-operative care, and in patients needing sodium-free hydration.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

The 500ml volume of Dextrose 5% provides approximately 85 kcal and 500ml of free water following glucose metabolism. Its mechanism is identical to the 1000ml formulation. The smaller volume offers precise control over fluid intake in patients at risk of fluid overload, such as those with cardiac or renal impairment, while still providing hydration and caloric supplementation.

SIDE EFFECTS

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Blood and blood products must not be mixed directly with dextrose solutions as red cell aggregation may occur. Amphotericin B is incompatible with dextrose. Phenytoin precipitates in dextrose solutions. Monitor glycemia with concurrent corticosteroid use.

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Store at room temperature between 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Protect from freezing. Do not use if solution appears discolored or the container is compromised. Single use only.
