INDICATION

Flashcast 5 Inch is a synthetic fiberglass casting tape used for the immobilization and support of fractures, sprains, and post-surgical limbs. It is applied over a padded stockinette to form a rigid cast around the injured extremity, maintaining anatomical alignment during the healing process.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Flashcast is a fiberglass-reinforced bandage impregnated with a water-activated polyurethane resin. When immersed in water and applied, the resin undergoes an exothermic curing reaction and hardens rapidly within 3 to 5 minutes, forming a rigid, lightweight, and durable cast. Fiberglass casts are stronger and lighter than plaster of Paris, allow limited X-ray visualization, are water-resistant, and have better durability for weight-bearing casts.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Apply the appropriate stockinette and cotton padding to the limb before casting

•      Immerse the roll in water at room temperature for 2 to 3 seconds

•      Apply the tape in overlapping turns (50 percent overlap) around the padded limb

•      Mold into the desired position and shape before the resin sets

•      Allow 3 to 5 minutes for initial set and 20 minutes for full strength

•      Use only under the supervision of a trained healthcare professional

•      Wear gloves during application as the resin may irritate skin

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

 

•      Mild warmth or heat during the curing exothermic reaction

•      Mild skin pressure under the cast

 

Less common:

 

•      Skin irritation or allergic reaction to fiberglass or polyurethane resin in sensitive individuals

•      Pressure sores if cast is not properly molded or padding is insufficient

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Do not apply directly to bare skin without stockinette and padding

•      Not for use in infected or open wounds

•      Do not use on areas with compromised circulation without physician supervision
