INDICATION

Ferrocite Tab is an iron and folic acid supplement used for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency and folate deficiency anemia, particularly during pregnancy and lactation. It helps maintain adequate hemoglobin levels, prevents neural tube defects in developing fetuses, and supports maternal health during periods of increased nutritional demand.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Iron in the ferrous form is actively absorbed from the proximal small intestine and incorporated into hemoglobin, myoglobin, and iron-containing enzymes. Folic acid is converted to its active tetrahydrofolate form by dihydrofolate reductase. Tetrahydrofolate is essential for purine and pyrimidine synthesis, and therefore for DNA replication and cell division, which is especially important during rapid erythropoiesis and fetal development.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 1 tablet once or twice daily

•      Pregnancy: 1 tablet once daily (ideally from preconception through the first trimester)

•      Take with or after meals to reduce gastric irritation

•      Take separately from antacids, tea, or calcium-rich foods by at least 2 hours

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Constipation, dark stools

•      Nausea, abdominal discomfort

•      Mild diarrhoea

Less common:

•      Gastric irritation

•      Allergic reactions

•      Iron overload in susceptible individuals

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Haemochromatosis or hemosiderosis

•      Hemolytic anemia not due to iron deficiency

•      Hypersensitivity to any component

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Iron reduces absorption of tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, levothyroxine, and levodopa. Antacids reduce iron absorption. Vitamin C enhances absorption. High-dose folic acid can mask B12 deficiency.
