INDICATION

Femicon Eye Drops are indicated for the treatment of inflammatory conditions of the anterior ocular segment combined with conjunctival redness and irritation, including allergic conjunctivitis with inflammation, post-procedural ocular inflammation with concurrent congestion, and steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the eye associated with redness.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Fluorometholone is a synthetic corticosteroid that inhibits phospholipase A2 via lipocortin induction, suppressing prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis and reducing ocular inflammation, redness, swelling, and allergic responses. Tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic alpha-adrenergic agonist that causes vasoconstriction of conjunctival blood vessels, reducing ocular redness rapidly. The combination provides dual-action relief of both inflammation and redness, with a relatively low risk of intraocular pressure elevation due to fluorometholone's favorable safety profile.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

·        Instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye or eyes two to four times daily. Shake well before use.

·        In the first 24 to 48 hours, frequency may be increased to every hour in severe cases.

·        Taper gradually as clinical improvement occurs.

·        Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.

·        Discard 28 days after opening.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Transient burning or stinging on instillation

•      Temporary blurring of vision after use

Less common:

•      Elevated intraocular pressure with prolonged corticosteroid use

•      Rebound redness on prolonged use of the decongestant component

•      Cataract formation with extended corticosteroid therapy

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Viral keratitis including herpes simplex, fungal, or mycobacterial eye infections

•      Patients with hypersensitivity to fluorometholone or sympathomimetics

•      Glaucoma or elevated intraocular pressure without close monitoring

DRUG INTERACTIONS

•      Concurrent anti-glaucoma therapy may need adjustment if IOP rises with steroid use

•      Monoamine oxidase inhibitors may potentiate the sympathomimetic component
