INDICATION

Fefan DS Tab is an iron and folic acid supplement used for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia and folate deficiency anemia. It is particularly indicated in pregnancy, lactation, nutritional deficiency, chronic blood loss, and conditions associated with increased iron and folate demands. It supports hemoglobin production and helps prevent neural tube defects in pregnancy.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Ferrous fumarate provides divalent iron (Fe2+) which is efficiently absorbed in the duodenum and upper jejunum. Iron is incorporated into hemoglobin in developing red blood cells and stored as ferritin and hemosiderin. Folic acid is converted to tetrahydrofolate, the active coenzyme essential for DNA synthesis, cell division, and amino acid metabolism. Together, these nutrients correct anemia due to iron and/or folate deficiency and support normal fetal neural development.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 1 tablet twice to three times daily with meals

•      Pregnant women: 1 tablet once or twice daily as directed

•      Iron deficiency anemia: continue for 3 to 6 months after hemoglobin normalizes

•      Take with water; vitamin C (orange juice) enhances iron absorption

•      Avoid taking with tea, coffee, dairy, or antacids (reduce iron absorption)

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Nausea, constipation

•      Dark (black) stools — expected and harmless

•      Abdominal discomfort

•      Diarrhoea in some patients

Less common:

•      Gastric irritation and epigastric pain

•      Allergic reaction to any ingredient

•      Iron overload with excessive intake

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Iron overload conditions (haemochromatosis, hemosiderosis)

•      Hemolytic anemia not associated with iron deficiency

•      Known hypersensitivity to any component

•      Do not combine with other iron supplements

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Iron significantly reduces the absorption of tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, levodopa, and levothyroxine; separate dosing by at least 2 to 3 hours. Antacids reduce iron absorption. Vitamin C enhances ferrous iron absorption. Folic acid at high doses may mask vitamin B12 deficiency.

Store Fefan DS tablets at room temperature below 25°C. Protect from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Keep in original packaging. Store out of reach of children.
