INDICATION

FDL 1000ml Normal Saline is a sterile isotonic intravenous solution indicated for extracellular fluid replacement in cases of dehydration, hypovolemia, blood loss, and sodium or chloride depletion. It is also used as a vehicle for the intravenous administration of compatible medications and for the restoration of circulating volume in clinical emergencies.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Sodium chloride 0.9% is an isotonic electrolyte solution with the same osmolality as plasma (approximately 308 mOsm/L). When administered intravenously, it distributes within the extracellular fluid compartment, including the intravascular and interstitial spaces. It restores and maintains blood volume, supports renal perfusion, and corrects deficits in sodium and chloride ions without causing significant fluid shifts across cell membranes.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

·        Administered intravenously under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

·        The dose, rate of infusion, and duration are determined by the patient's condition, body weight, age, and clinical response.

·        Typical adult doses range from 500 ml to 3000 ml per day. Rate and volume must be individually titrated.

·        Monitor fluid balance, serum electrolytes, and clinical signs throughout administration.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Mild injection site reactions including redness or phlebitis

•      Fluid retention with rapid or excessive infusion

Less common:

•      Hypernatremia or hyperchloremia with excessive administration

•      Dilutional hypoproteinemia or acidosis with large volumes

•      Peripheral or pulmonary edema in susceptible patients

 

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Patients with hypernatremia or hyperchloremia

•      Patients with severe congestive heart failure or pulmonary edema

•      Use caution in patients with renal impairment, liver cirrhosis, or hypertension

DRUG INTERACTIONS

•      Lithium toxicity may be potentiated if sodium balance is altered

•      Corticosteroids may promote sodium and water retention when co-administered

•      Monitor for electrolyte interactions when mixed with other IV solutions

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Store at room temperature between 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Protect from freezing. Do not use if the solution is cloudy, discolored, or if the seal is damaged. Use immediately after opening.
