INDICATION

Eyefem Drop is indicated for the treatment of inflammatory conditions of the anterior segment of the eye that are responsive to corticosteroids. It is used in conjunctivitis, keratitis, iritis, cyclitis, and post-surgical ocular inflammation when the risk of bacterial infection is absent.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Fluorometholone is a synthetic corticosteroid that inhibits phospholipase A2 through induction of lipocortin, reducing arachidonic acid release and thereby limiting the production of prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes. In the eye, this suppresses inflammatory edema, cellular infiltration, capillary dilation, and fibroblast proliferation, providing effective anti-inflammatory relief with a relatively low risk of intraocular pressure elevation compared to stronger corticosteroids.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Instill 1 to 2 drops into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye two to four times daily. In the initial 24 to 48 hours, the dosage may be increased to one to two drops every hour. Shake well before use. Tilt the head back and instill the drops into the lower conjunctival sac. Do not touch the dropper to any surface.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Mild stinging or burning on instillation

•      Transient blurring of vision

Less common:

•      Elevated intraocular pressure with prolonged use

•      Cataract formation with extended treatment

•      Susceptibility to secondary eye infections

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva including herpes simplex keratitis

•      Fungal or mycobacterial eye infections

•      Acute purulent bacterial eye infections

•      Patients with hypersensitivity to fluorometholone or other corticosteroids

DRUG INTERACTIONS

•      Concurrent anti-glaucoma medications may need dose adjustment if IOP elevation occurs

•      Systemic corticosteroids may have additive immunosuppressive effects if absorbed

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Store between 2 to 25 degrees Celsius. Protect from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Shake well before use. Discard 28 days after first opening. Keep out of reach of children.
