INDICATION

Duac Gel is indicated for the topical treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris, including papules, pustules, and comedones, in patients aged 12 years and above.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of Propionibacterium acnes, the primary bacteria responsible for acne. Benzoyl peroxide acts as a keratolytic and bactericidal agent by releasing oxygen radicals that kill P. acnes and reduce skin oiliness. The combination provides synergistic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action, reducing both the bacterial burden and inflammatory lesions.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Apply once daily in the evening to the affected area. Thoroughly wash and pat dry the skin before application. Apply a thin, even layer using fingertips. Avoid eyes, mouth, lips, and mucous membranes. For external use only. Complete the full prescribed course even if improvement is seen. Do not exceed the recommended frequency.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Skin dryness, peeling, or flaking

•      Erythema or redness at application site

•      Burning or stinging sensation on application

Less common:

•      Skin bleaching of hair or colored fabrics on contact

•      Sunburn-like reaction with excessive sun exposure

•      Allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive patients

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Patients with hypersensitivity to clindamycin, lincomycin, or benzoyl peroxide

•      Patients with a history of antibiotic-associated colitis or Crohn's disease

•      Not for use during pregnancy without specialist advice

•      Not recommended in children below 12 years

DRUG INTERACTIONS

•      Erythromycin may antagonize the antibacterial effect of clindamycin

•      Avoid combination with other topical acne products containing alcohol or abrasives

•      Neuromuscular blocking agents may be potentiated by systemic clindamycin if absorbed

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Store in a refrigerator between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. After dispensing to patient, may be stored at room temperature up to 25 degrees Celsius for a maximum of 2 months. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
