INDICATION

Diabetron CR 30mg is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, physical exercise, and weight reduction alone are insufficient. It is used to reduce blood glucose levels as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Gliclazide is a second-generation sulphonylureas that lowers blood glucose by stimulating insulin secretion from the beta cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. The modified release (CR) formulation provides a gradual, sustained release of gliclazide, resulting in a smooth insulin response over 24 hours and reducing the risk of hypoglycemia compared to immediate-release formulations. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

·        The usual starting dose is 30mg once daily with breakfast.

·        The dose may be adjusted based on blood glucose response, up to a maximum of 120mg daily (four 30mg tablets).

·        Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew.

·        Take at the same time each day.

·        Regular blood glucose monitoring is required.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Hypoglycemia, particularly with meal delays or excess doses

Less common:

•      Skin reactions including rash or urticaria in rare cases

DRUG INTERACTIONS

•      NSAIDs and salicylates may potentiate hypoglycemic effect

•      Miconazole is contraindicated due to severe hypoglycemia risk

•      Beta-blockers may mask hypoglycemia symptoms

•      Rifampicin may reduce gliclazide efficacy by induction of metabolism
