INDICATION

Corn Cap Medicare is a topical keratolytic preparation used for the removal of corns, calluses, and plantar warts (verrucae) on the feet. It is applied directly over the thickened, hardened skin and works by softening and dissolving the excess keratin layer, making it easier to remove the corn or callus.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Salicylic acid at high concentrations acts as a keratolytic agent. It lowers the pH of the skin surface, causing softening and dissolution of the intercellular cement that holds together the stratum corneum (outer horny layer of skin). This loosens and sheds the thickened keratin that forms corns and calluses. In wart treatment, it also has a mild antiviral effect by inducing an immune response at the site and physically removing the virus-infected tissue.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Soak the affected foot in warm water for 5 minutes to soften the skin

•      Dry thoroughly; apply the medicated plaster or cap directly over the corn or callus

•      Replace after 48 to 72 hours; use nail file or pumice stone to gently remove softened tissue after each application

•      Continue treatment for up to 2 to 3 weeks

•      Avoid applying to healthy surrounding skin; protect with petroleum jelly if needed

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Skin irritation or redness at the application site

•      Mild burning or stinging sensation

•      Peeling of surrounding skin

Less common:

•      Salicylate toxicity with excessive use over large areas (systemic absorption)

•      Skin ulceration if used on broken or infected skin

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Diabetic patients (risk of skin ulceration and poor healing)

•      Do not apply to infected, inflamed, or broken skin

•      Not for use on facial skin or moles

•      Do not use in children under 12 years without medical advice
