INDICATION

Clindasol 10/50 Gel 15g is a topical fixed-dose combination antibiotic and bactericidal agent indicated for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older. The combination provides superior efficacy over either clindamycin or benzoyl peroxide alone, while the benzoyl peroxide component reduces the risk of clindamycin resistance development. It is suitable for use on the face and other acne-prone areas.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Clindamycin phosphate is a topical antibiotic that changes into active clindamycin on the skin and inside hair follicles. It works by stopping bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of Cutibacterium acnes, which reduces the number of acne-causing bacteria and lowers inflammation in the skin. Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria by releasing reactive oxygen species that damage C. acnes inside the follicles. Since benzoyl peroxide directly kills bacteria, combining it with clindamycin also helps prevent bacterial resistance from developing.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Apply a thin layer to the affected area once daily in the evening to clean, dry skin

•      Wash the face and pat dry before application

•      Avoid the eyes, lips, nostrils, mouth, and mucous membranes

•      Use a non-comedogenic sunscreen during the day; always follow your dermatologist's instructions

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Skin dryness, peeling, and erythema (common, particularly in the first 2 to 4 weeks)

•      Burning and stinging on application

•      Skin tightness

•      Increased photosensitivity

Less common:

•      Bleaching of hair and colored fabric from benzoyl peroxide component

•      Contact dermatitis or allergic reaction in sensitive individuals

•      Excessive skin irritation with over-application

•      Colitis: although very rare with topical clindamycin, pseudomembranous colitis has been reported

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Topical retinoids combined with this gel may cause excessive skin irritation; use at different times of day. Benzoyl peroxide may oxidize and inactivate other topical preparations if applied simultaneously; use at different times. Erythromycin combined with clindamycin has antagonistic antibacterial activity; avoid combination.
