INDICATION

Citolin 500mg Tab is a neuroprotective agent used in the management of acute ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, vascular dementia, and cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer's disease. It supports neuronal membrane integrity, reduces cerebral oedema, and promotes recovery of neurological function.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Citicoline (CDP-choline) is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a key structural phospholipid in neuronal cell membranes. It provides choline and cytidine, precursors required for membrane phospholipid synthesis and repair. In ischemic brain injury, citicoline stabilizes neuronal membranes, inhibits the release of free fatty acids and arachidonic acid, reduces glutamate excitotoxicity, and supports the restoration of sodium-potassium ATPase activity.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Acute stroke: 500mg to 1000mg orally or IV twice daily during the acute phase, then 500mg twice daily for maintenance

•      Cognitive impairment and dementia: 500mg twice daily

•      Tablets may be taken with or without food

•      Treatment duration for cognitive conditions typically several months; review regularly

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Nausea, mild gastrointestinal discomfort

•      Headache

•      Insomnia if taken late in the day

•      Mild hypotension

Less common:

•      Bradycardia (rare)

•      Hypersensitivity reactions

•      Agitation or restlessness in sensitive patients

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

DRUG INTERACTIONS
