INDICATION

Citolin 250mg/2ml Inj is a parenteral neuroprotective and nootropic agent indicated for the acute management of ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, head trauma, and acute neurological emergencies where rapid citicoline delivery is required. It is also used in the subacute phase of recovery from stroke and traumatic brain injury when oral administration is not feasible.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Citicoline enhances neuronal phosphatidylcholine synthesis and repair, stimulates acetylcholine production, reduces excitotoxic neuronal damage through free arachidonic acid reduction, and supports neuroplasticity. The parenteral route bypasses first-pass metabolism and gastrointestinal absorption barriers, providing more rapid and complete delivery of citicoline to the CNS in the acute setting.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Acute stroke: 500 to 1000mg by slow intravenous injection or infusion every 12 hours in the first 14 days

•      Head trauma: 500mg every 12 hours by IV or IM injection

•      Administer by slow IV injection over 3 to 5 minutes or by IV infusion; may also be given by deep IM injection

•      Prescribed and administered by healthcare professionals; transition to oral formulation when patient condition allows

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Mild hypotension with rapid IV injection (administer slowly)

•      Nausea

•      Headache

•      Bradycardia (rare; cholinergic effect)

Less common:

•      Allergic reaction to any excipient

•      Parasympathetic overstimulation at high doses

•      Restlessness

•      Mild fever (rare)

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Known hypersensitivity to citicoline

•      Concurrent meclofenoxate

•      Parkinson's disease patients on levodopa (monitor closely)

•      Caution in hypertonia

DRUG INTERACTIONS
