INDICATION

Calmcol Syrup 120ml is an herbal expectorant syrup based on Ivy Leaf Extract indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory bronchial conditions including productive cough, bronchitis, and upper respiratory catarrh in children and adults. It reduces mucus viscosity, facilitates expectoration, and provides mild bronchodilatory relief to improve airway clearance. The syrup formulation is suitable for older children and adults who prefer a larger volume preparation.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Same mechanism as Calmcol Drop. Ivy Leaf Extract saponins, particularly alpha-hederin and hederacoside C, act on beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle to produce bronchodilation and stimulate surfactant secretion from type II pneumocytes, reducing airway surface tension and improving mucociliary clearance. The mucolytic properties of ivy saponins reduce mucus viscosity, facilitating productive cough and airway secretion clearance. The 120ml syrup provides the same standardized ivy leaf extract as the drops in a more concentrated volume suitable for older patients.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Children 5 to 12 years: 5ml three times daily

•      Adults and children above 12 years: 7.5ml three times daily

•      Shake well before each use; take with or after food

•      Always follow the dosage recommended by your doctor or pharmacist; consult a doctor if symptoms persist beyond 7 days

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Mild nausea if taken on an empty stomach

•      Mild gastrointestinal discomfort

•      Mild diarrhoea at higher doses

•      Allergic skin reaction in ivy-sensitive individuals

Less common:

•      Vomiting at high doses (saponin-related)

•      Urticaria or skin rash in hypersensitive individuals

•      Paradoxical bronchoconstriction in rare cases of ivy allergy

•      Allergic reaction to any excipient

NOT RECOMMENDED IN

•      Known hypersensitivity to Hedera helix or plants of the Araliaceous family

•      Children below 5 years (use Calmcol Drops for younger children)

•      Persistent or severe cough with high fever without medical assessment

•      Known fructose intolerance if the formulation contains fructose-based excipients

DRUG INTERACTIONS

No clinically significant drug interactions have been documented with standardized ivy leaf extract syrup at recommended oral doses. Additive bronchodilatory effect may occur with concurrent beta-2 agonist inhalers, which is not clinically significant at therapeutic doses. No significant interactions with antibiotics, antipyretics, or antihistamines commonly used alongside cough preparations have been reported.
