GENERIC: Calcium Carbonate 600mg/5ml Syrup (Calcium Supplement)
MANUFACTURER: Martindale Healthcare (Pvt) Ltd
QUANTITY:
120ml syrup
INDICATION
Calcite 600 Syrup 120ml is a calcium supplement indicated for the prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency states including hypocalcemia, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, and as a dietary adjunct in pregnant and breastfeeding women, growing children, post-menopausal women, and elderly patients with increased calcium requirements. It is also used as an antacid for the symptomatic relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach. The syrup formulation is suitable for children, the elderly, and patients who cannot swallow solid dosage forms.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Calcium carbonate provides ionized calcium that is absorbed in the proximal small intestine in an acid-dependent process facilitated by vitamin D-regulated calcium transport proteins. Calcium is the principal mineral of bone, comprising approximately 99% of the body's calcium stores as hydroxyapatite in the skeletal matrix. Supplemental calcium supports bone mineralization, neuromuscular function, cardiac contractility, enzyme activation, and blood coagulation. As an antacid, calcium carbonate neutralizes gastric acid through the reaction of calcium carbonate with hydrochloric acid to produce calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide, raising intragastric pH and providing symptomatic relief from acid-related symptoms.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
• Adults: 10ml (600mg calcium carbonate) two to three times daily with or after meals
• Children 6 to 12 years: 5ml once or twice daily as directed by a pediatrician
• Antacid use: 10 to 20ml as needed after meals and at bedtime; maximum 4 doses per day
• Always follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor; do not exceed the maximum recommended calcium intake including dietary sources
SIDE EFFECTS
Common:
• Constipation (most common with calcium carbonate; increase fluid and dietary fibre intake)
• Nausea and bloating
• Flatulence from carbon dioxide release
• Chalky or milky taste
Less common:
• Hypercalcemia with excessive prolonged use: thirst, polyuria, confusion, and weakness
• Milk-alkali syndrome with very high doses combined with absorbable alkali
• Kidney stones with excessive intake in susceptible individuals
• Rebound acid hypersecretion with frequent antacid use
NOT RECOMMENDED IN
• Hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria
• Calcium nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
• Severe renal impairment
• Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient; avoid combination with other calcium supplements without medical supervision
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Calcium carbonate reduces absorption of tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics; take these at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after calcium. Iron absorption is reduced when taken together; administer separately. Bisphosphonates such as alendronate have significantly reduced absorption with calcium; take bisphosphonates on an empty stomach 2 hours before calcium. Thiazide diuretics combined with calcium increase hypercalcemia risk. Digoxin toxicity risk is increased by hypercalcemia.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Shake well before use. Keep tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.
