INDICATION

Biozin Syrup 60ml is a zinc supplement in syrup form indicated for the prevention and treatment of zinc deficiency in infants, children, and adults. It is used in pediatric diarrhoea management as per WHO recommendations, where zinc supplementation reduces diarrhoea severity and duration. It is also indicated for zinc deficiency associated with malnutrition, malabsorption syndromes, acrodermatitis enteropathica, and as a dietary supplement in populations at risk of zinc deficiency. The syrup formulation is particularly suitable for infants and young children.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Zinc is an essential trace mineral that serves as a catalytic cofactor for over 300 enzymes involved in nucleic acid synthesis, protein synthesis, immune function, and cell division. Zinc sulphate as an oral supplement corrects zinc deficiency by providing bioavailable zinc ions that are absorbed in the small intestine and distributed to tissues where they are incorporated into zinc-dependent enzymes and proteins. In diarrhoea, zinc supplementation reduces intestinal permeability, restores intestinal mucosal integrity, and enhances immune function including lymphocyte activity and natural killer cell function, reducing diarrhoea duration and severity.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      WHO guideline for acute diarrhoea in children 6 months to 5 years: 20mg (5ml) once daily for 10 to 14 days

•      Infants below 6 months: 10mg (2.5ml) once daily for 10 to 14 days

•      Zinc deficiency treatment in adults: 20 to 40mg elemental zinc daily in divided doses with food

•      Always follow the dosage recommended by your doctor; give with or after meals to reduce nausea

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Nausea and vomiting (most common; reduced when taken with food)

•      Abdominal cramps

•      Metallic taste

•      Diarrhoea with high doses

Less common:

•      Copper deficiency with prolonged high-dose zinc supplementation causing anemia and neurological symptoms

•      Reduced iron absorption when taken together with iron supplements

•      Headache

•      Elevated liver enzymes with toxic doses

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Zinc reduces absorption of tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics; take at least 2 hours apart. Iron reduces zinc absorption when taken concurrently; take at different times. Zinc at high doses may reduce copper absorption; supplement copper in long-term high-dose therapy. Penicillamine chelates zinc; take 2 hours apart.
